Route overview

Setting off from Perth in a rented motorhome for a 15-day loop along Western Australia’s stunning coastline is a dream road trip for nature-loving families and curious explorers alike. With some smart road trip planning, a reliable route planner, and a spirit of adventure, this campervan journey unlocks some of the most breathtaking landscapes, marine encounters, and cultural highlights the west coast has to offer.

We began our RV journey using a Perth camper route planner, charting a path that would allow flexibility for wildlife stops, swim breaks, and scenic detours. Just a few hours north, the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre made for a perfect first adventure. Walking among the ancient limestone spires was like stepping onto another planet—an unforgettable moment for the kids and a fantastic photo opportunity.

Continuing our drive, we explored the Museum of Geraldton, which gave us a glimpse into maritime history and the shipwrecks that dot the coast. Just around the corner, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery added a touch of culture and color, offering a fun contrast to our more nature-heavy stops.

One of the big highlights of the trip was the journey inland to see Nature’s Window in Kalbarri National Park. This natural rock arch frames sweeping views of the gorge and made for a great picnic spot and short walk for the whole family.

Of course, no Western Australia motorhome road trip is complete without time spent at Ningaloo Reef. We parked our campervan near Turquoise Bay, where the water lived up to its name and the snorkelling was simply world-class. For something truly once-in-a-lifetime, we joined Ningaloo Discovery Whale Shark Tours and swam with the gentle giants of the sea—an incredible, family-friendly tour operated with care and professionalism.

We stocked up on fresh produce and mango ice cream at Bumbak’s near Carnarvon—highly recommended for RV travelers looking for a wholesome pitstop. Heading further south, Hamelin Pool Stromatolites Boardwalk offered a fascinating window into Earth’s earliest life forms. The kids were amazed to learn these rock-like structures were alive and among the oldest organisms on the planet.

At Monkey Mia, the dolphins stole the show. The Conservation Park Visitor Centre does a wonderful job educating visitors about marine life while ensuring ethical interactions. It’s worth timing your visit to catch a morning feeding session.

On the return stretch, the Pink Lake Lookout made for a picture-perfect pause—the shimmering lake was even more vibrant in person than we'd imagined. We ended our journey back in Perth with a relaxed afternoon at the Belmont Forum, grabbing some last-minute souvenirs and treats before returning the RV.

Tips for the Trip:

  • Plan your motorhome trip in Australia carefully—distances in WA can be vast, so use a reliable route planner and build in buffer time for detours and unexpected delights.

  • Opt for a campervan or motorhome with kitchen facilities. Remote areas have fewer dining options, and it’s fun to cook under the stars at a beachside campground.

  • Book wildlife tours and National Park visits in advance, especially during holiday periods.

  • Carry plenty of water, sun protection, and snacks for the kids—many stops are in beautifully remote areas.

  • Use the Perth camper route planner to select RV-friendly campgrounds with power, shade, and kid-friendly amenities.

This round trip from Perth opened our eyes to the beauty and diversity of WA’s coastline. It was a memorable blend of marine life, desert magic, and cultural gems—exactly the kind of journey that makes RV travel in Australia so special.
