Darwin to Broome - Wild North Discovery

Embarking on a 15-day road trip from Darwin to Broome in a rented motorhome was an adventure we’d dreamed of for years. Setting out from the tropical city of Darwin, we kicked off our journey with a visit to the RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility, where the kids were captivated by the stories of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, exploring interactive exhibits and learning about the incredible life-saving work done in Australia's remote areas.

Our motorhome was our cozy base for the journey, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace. Heading inland, we soon found ourselves in the stunning wetlands of Yellow Water in Kakadu National Park. Cruising along the billabongs, we marveled at the wildlife—crocodiles basking on the riverbanks and flocks of birds soaring overhead. The thrill of spotting these creatures in their natural habitat was something none of us would ever forget.

We continued to Katherine, where the Katherine Outback Experience treated us to an unforgettable insight into the life of the Australian bush. Watching horse training and working dog demonstrations, and hearing the heartwarming tales of life on the land, the experience was as educational as it was entertaining. The kids loved every minute and were particularly fascinated by the friendly farm animals.

Our journey then took us towards Kununurra, where Kangaroo Haven provided a chance to meet and learn about rescued kangaroos and other local wildlife. Here, the kids fed the animals and even cuddled a joey or two, which quickly became one of their favorite memories of the trip.

We ventured further into the Kimberley region, where Emma Gorge at El Questro offered an enchanting oasis. After a short walk, we were greeted by the sight of a breathtaking waterfall and a crystal-clear swimming hole, perfect for cooling off from the Kimberley heat. The serene surroundings and the stunning natural beauty were perfect for a family picnic and a splash in the refreshing waters.

As we continued, our route planner guided us to the mesmerizing landscape of Purnululu National Park, home to the iconic Bungle Bungles. Hiking among these unique beehive-shaped rock formations felt like stepping into another world, and the kids were excited to explore the narrow canyons and caves.

Our journey took a turn toward ancient culture with a visit to the Mimbi Caves. Here, we joined a Mimbi Caves Tour, where an Aboriginal guide shared fascinating stories of the Dreamtime and the area's rich history. The stunning limestone caves, adorned with ancient paintings, left us all in awe.

On the way to Broome, we made a stop at the RAAF Boab Quarry, an unexpectedly serene spot with an enormous boab tree marking the place where RAAF pilots trained during World War II. The kids were intrigued by the history, while we enjoyed the tranquility of the landscape.

Arriving in Broome, we treated ourselves to fresh seafood at the Sydney Cove Oyster Bar—a delicious reward for our journey. Finally, we indulged in a bit of shopping at the Primewest Broome Boulevard, picking up souvenirs to remember our unforgettable trip.

Our motorhome adventure from Darwin to Broome gave us the chance to explore the vast, untamed beauty of Australia’s north at our own pace, and discover places we’d never have seen otherwise. It was a family-friendly journey packed with unique experiences, and our best tip for anyone planning a similar road trip would be to keep your route planner flexible, embrace the unexpected, and always allow extra time to stop and explore the hidden gems along the way.
