Route overview

Embarking on an 18-day motorhome adventure from Auckland to Queenstown was like stepping into a dream, exploring the diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures of New Zealand’s North and South Islands. This journey, filled with excitement and discovery, was perfectly suited for families, combining the comfort of our rented RV with unforgettable experiences.

Our trip began in Auckland, where we spent a delightful day at the Auckland Zoo. The kids were thrilled to see native and exotic animals up close, from playful monkeys to majestic lions. Next, we immersed ourselves in Maori culture at Tamaki Maori Village (Te Pa Tu - Gathering Place), where the interactive performances and traditional feasts offered a rich cultural experience that brought New Zealand’s heritage to life.

As we headed south, the Desert Road provided a stunning contrast with its arid landscapes and views of the volcanic peaks. We paused to capture some breathtaking photos before continuing to the Space Place at Carter Observatory in Wellington. The planetarium show and interactive exhibits sparked the kids' imaginations and provided a cosmic interlude to our journey.

Crossing to the South Island, our motorhome adventure took us through the picturesque landscapes of the West Coast. At Cable Bay Adventure Park, we enjoyed exhilarating activities like zip-lining and mountain biking, perfect for the adventurous spirit in the family.

The Buller Gorge Swing Bridge offered an adrenaline-pumping experience, swinging high above the river, with the surrounding scenery providing a spectacular backdrop. Shantytown Heritage Park was another highlight, where we stepped back in time to explore the recreated gold-mining town, complete with interactive exhibits and historical artifacts.

The Glacier Valley Eco Tours allowed us to witness the majestic Franz Josef Glacier up close. The guided tours provided fascinating insights into the glacier's formation and its role in the local ecosystem. Afterward, we relaxed in the soothing Onsen Hot Pools, a perfect way to unwind while soaking in stunning alpine views.

No trip to New Zealand’s South Island would be complete without a visit to Milford Sound. RealNZ’s Milford Sound Visitor Terminal was our gateway to one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders. A scenic cruise through the fjord, surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls, was a highlight of the trip.

We took a tranquil nature walk around Lake Gunn, where the serene environment and lush forest offered a peaceful retreat. Our journey concluded in Queenstown, where the Skyline Gondola provided panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains, a fitting end to our epic road trip.

Planning this motorhome adventure required careful road trip planning and route mapping to ensure we made the most of each day. The RV offered the flexibility to explore at our own pace and provided a cozy base for our travels. For families planning a similar journey, booking popular attractions in advance and packing for a variety of weather conditions are essential.
