USA Road Trip from Billings to Chicago: An 18-Day RV Journey Through the Heart of America

There is something unforgettable about setting off on a motorhome adventure across the northern United States. Our RV journey from Billings to Chicago stretched across Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois, weaving together landscapes of rugged canyons, soaring mountains, charming small towns, and vibrant cities. With the right road trip planning, a flexible route planner, and a spirit of adventure, this became a family experience filled with natural wonders, cultural gems, and plenty of delicious food along the way.

The trip began in Billings, where we explored Pictograph Cave State Park, a place where ancient rock art whispers the stories of the first people who lived in this land. Just a short drive brought us face-to-face with the bears of the Montana Grizzly Encounter, a stop that delighted the kids and reminded us why RV travel makes it so easy to pause for family-friendly attractions.

Crossing into Wyoming, Yellowstone became the heart of our route. The Firehole Canyon Road, the surreal geothermal pools at West Thumb Geyser Basin, and the timeless spectacle of Old Faithful were highlights that no campervan road trip through this region should miss. Nearby, Cody’s Buffalo Bill Center of the West and the historic Cowboy Bar & Grill brought the Old West alive with food, history, and cowboy charm.

Heading east into South Dakota, the landscapes shifted dramatically. The otherworldly rock spires around Devils Tower and the gold rush history at the Broken Boot Gold Mine gave the kids both a taste of geology and adventure. Mount Rushmore National Memorial stood proudly above the Black Hills, while the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Road and Pinnacles Overlook in the Badlands revealed wild bison, pronghorn, and breathtaking views. Driving the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway in a motorhome felt like gliding through another planet, a reminder of the importance of careful road trip planning to time stops for photographs, picnics, and fuel.

South Dakota also offered slices of Americana, from the quirky Pioneer Auto Museum to the fascinating Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, where history and archaeology meet.

Crossing into Minnesota, our family embraced both nature and city life. The kids loved the Butterfly House & Aquarium, while adults appreciated the world-class exhibits at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Of course, no family RV trip would be complete without a stop at the Mall of America, where roller coasters, shops, and endless dining options turned a simple shopping stop into a full-day adventure.

On the way east, the National Eagle Center allowed us to see these majestic birds up close, before a detour into Wisconsin added unique surprises: the whimsical House on the Rock, a quirky wonderland of art and fantasy, and the amusingly educational National Mustard Museum, where food lovers found something completely different to rave about.

The final stretch into Illinois brought us into the cultural heart of Chicago. At the Field Museum, the kids were awed by Sue the T. rex and countless other exhibits, while the northernmost point of Lake Shore Drive framed our arrival with one of the most iconic skylines in America.
