The iconic Mount Rushmore — of course — made for a humbling stop, best visited in the early morning for smaller crowds and better light.
One of our favorite family-friendly experiences was the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop, where we watched bison roam across golden grasslands. For a fun cultural and educational stop, Fort Laramie Visitor Center in Wyoming painted a vivid picture of pioneer life on the frontier.
As we rolled into Colorado, we found both city delights and natural escapes. New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins was a treat for the adults (and they welcomed kids and dogs on the patio!). Dinosaur lovers in our crew adored the Dinosaur Journey Museum, part of the Museums of Western Colorado — hands-on and fossil-rich. We even took a real mine tour at the Bachelor Syracuse Mine near Ouray before tackling the scenic — and sometimes heart-racing — Million Dollar Highway.
Crossing into New Mexico brought a whole new atmosphere — red cliffs, adobe culture, and wide skies. We stopped to stretch at the Navajo Zoological Park, and discovered fascinating Native art at the Gallup Cultural Center and Zuni Visitor Center.
One of the most unusual and memorable natural wonders of the trip was the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, a surreal mix of lava tubes and frozen mystery in the desert heat. We wrapped up our journey in Albuquerque, taking in sweeping views from the Sandia Peak Tramway and picking up a few last souvenirs at the Coronado Center.
