Driver’s Licence and Minimum Age

A valid, non-provisional, state or overseas driver’s licence is required. If the driver’s licence is not in the English language (e.g. German, French, Chinese, etc) then an international driver’s licence is also required. For travel in the Northern Territory, an International Driving Permit is required along with the foreign driver licence. We do not accept Digital Driver licences.

Note: UK driver licences that have had approved extensions by the UK DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency) can still travel for up to 11 months past the licence expiry. This extension only applies to full GB driving licence holders. It does not apply to provisional driving licence entitlement.
The driver’s licence must have been held for at least two years and be valid for the whole length of the rental. The original driver’s licence must be shown at time of pick-up when the driver is present.

The minimum age to drive the vehicle is 21 years.


Pre-purchased Gas Bottle (Included on the Value Pack)

The gas bottle(s) is supplied full. A service fee is payable on pick up of the vehicle:

$25 – Cheapa Hitop/Endeavour/2 berth ST/Vivid

$35 – 3, 4 and 6 Berth Motorhomes


The gas bottle can be returned empty to Rental center at the completion of the rental. The fee applies for each part of a multiple rental.  


Road User Charge Recovery Fee
The Diesel Tax Recovery Fee will be calculated and collected on return of the vehicle based on the kilometres travelled during the hire. The fee per 100km is as follows:
2 Berth S/TNZ$7.60
4 Berth and 6 BerthNZ$8.02
We reserve the right to amend the Road User Charge Recovery Fee upon Government intervention.


Multiple Rentals
Consecutive Apollo Motorhome/Campervan rentals can be combined to qualify for a long-term discount rate. Rentals in the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland on Star RV, Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippie Camper can be combined to obtain a long-term discount rate, providing travel is within a 3 month period. If drop off of a vehicle and pick up of a new vehicle occurs on the same day then a day each will be charged per respective vehicle. Multiple rentals are treated as separate rentals under the one way fee and minimum rental period conditions. This discount does not apply to completed bookings.


Booking Amendments 
If you wish to make any changes to your booking (including voluntary downgrade) the booking will be calculated by using either the original flex rate or the flex rate that is valid at the time of the booking change, depending on whichever rate is higher. There are no exceptions to this rule. The following situations are classified as booking alterations: 
- Change of name
- Change to pick-up or drop-off  dates
- Change pick-up or drop-off branch location
- Change of RV category
- Change of rate scheme including special rates
If the rate scheme or RV category is changed, this is considered a new booking and cancellation fees may apply to the original booking.

If an amendment is made to the rental dates within 14 days of collection, no refund will be made if the length of hire is shortened (that is; the rental will be charged at the number of days originally booked). A relocation fee may apply if the collection or return location is amended within 14 days of vehicle pick up or if notification occurs during the hire.
Any change is for extra charge.
If cancelled on day of pick-up or no show - 100% of rental including any applicable fees e.g. One Way.


Change of Drop Off Destination
If the renter wishes to change the drop off destination after the rental has commenced, they first must obtain authorisation from the Cheapa Campa Head Office. Subject to the change being approved, a minimum additional charge of $750 will apply.


Rental Extension

If the guest wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Cheapa Campa Reservations who will advise of the additional costs. Rental extension is subject to fleet availability. The extra cost (Calculated on the current rate of the day) of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone or at an Apollo Branch immediately on confirmation of the rental extension.

Failure to obtain authorisation will result in the renter being charged double the daily gross rental rate.


Change Of Vehicle

Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, we reserve the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the renter to a refund. 

Vehicle Category

Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.

Voluntary Downgrade

Should the renter decide to take a lesser vehicle than booked within 14 days of pick up or during the rental then they will not be entitled to any refund.


Online Check-In
It is mandatory for guests to complete Apollo’s online check-in prior to pick up at: https://preregistration.apollocamper.com/
By completing the required pick-up information ahead of the pick-up date, guests will experience a smoother and quicker RV collection process. Guests will also be required to watch our Apollo safe driving video prior to pick up, and can access our ‘How To Videos’ through the Apollo Connect App prior to pick up to learn how to use their RV.


Vehicles must be collected and returned to our branches (not airports).
Apollo offers transfers free of charge with the Yellow Bus transfer service between Auckland Airport to our Auckland Branch. Guests will need to show their printed confirmation of their reservation to the driver. Bookings are not needed. Free Christchurch transfers are with our own bus service which guests need to call the branch on arrival to arrange pick up once they have cleared customs. More information on Christchurch transfers can be found on: https://www.apollocamper.co.nz/locations/campervan-locations/christchurch

Branch Locations and opening Hours
Apollo has branches in Auckland and Christchurch.
Branches will be closed Christmas Day, New Years Day and Good Friday.
Branches are open 8am to 4pm - 7 days a week.
After hours drop offs available outside of these times - we will provide a lock box service on request for those needing to return outside of standard hours.


Vehicle Consultation

On pick up of the vehicle our staff will provide a complimentary vehicle consultation. This includes explaining all the interior and exterior features of the vehicle as well as driving tips.


Rental Duration

The minimum rental period for all vehicles is five days.
A 10 day minimum rental period applies between 1 October 2020 and 31 March 2021, for all vehicles from Auckland to Christchurch.
A 10 day minimum rental period applies between 29 March to 3 April 2021.
A 10 day minimum rental period applies during the period of 18 December 2021 to 2 January 2022.
A 7 day minimum rental period applies during the period of 11 to 16 April 2022.
A 10 day minimum rental period applies during the period of 18 December 2022 to 2 January 2023.
Minimum rental periods are subject to change during peak periods.

A compulsory cleaning fee of NZ$75 will aplly for rentals 5 days or less.


One Way Rentals

NZ$150 applies between all locations and 7 days minimum.

Travel Restrictions 
Cheapa reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions, and the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the rental period.
All RV's can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The only exception to this is the loose road surface on any major ski field access roads or any recognised campground access road less than 10 Kilometres in length.
No RV shall be driven on Skippers Road (Queenstown), The Crown Range Road/Cardrona Valley Road (between Arrow Junction to Cardrona), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook), Wanaka - Mt. Aspiring Road beyond exit to Treble Cone, The Forgotten Highway (State Highway 43 from Taumaranui to Stratford), and North of Colville and Waikawau Township (Coromandel Peninsula).

Guests who travel to restricted areas without permission will void all liability cover in the event of damage or accident, and may be subject to a penalty fee of NZ$300 charged on each occasion identified.

Rates include unlimited kilometres.
For the safety of guests please don’t underestimate the time it will take to get from one point to another. While our RVs include unlimited kilometres we recommend travelling a maximum of 300 kilometres per day or the equivalent of 4-5 hours driving. We encourage our guests to take a break from driving at least every 2 hours.
Vehicle Condition
Vehicles must be returned with the interior cleaned and holding tanks emptied. The vehicles exterior does not require cleaning unless it is difficult to ascertain the condition of the vehicle on return. NZ$200 Fees will apply if the vehicle is not returned in the required condition.

Drop and Go Service
All vehicles are to be returned with all surfaces wiped down (kitchen, floors, cupboard, tables, toilet & shower cubicle, windows etc.), fridge cleaned and emptied, rubbish removed, excessively dirty exteriors cleaned and beds converted back to dinettes. Should guests be on a tight schedule we can do this for them for 
$75 – purchased at pick up. You simply need to Empty the grey water and toilet cassette, put away the clean dishes and return the vehicle neat and tidy to our Apollo team. The Apollo team will do the rest: Clean the kitchen and appliances, clear and clean the fridge, clean all cupboards and benches, clean the bathroom, clean the driving cabin and dispose of your last days' garbage. Garbage must be bagged. Excessive dirt/mud inside or outside the vehicle will incur additional charges.
Although we run late model vehicles, it may happen that small repairs are required. Repairs up to $100 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed unless the damage is caused by the renter. For amounts over $100, Apollo will need to be informed in advance. All vehicles are enrolled in the New Zealand Automobile Association and 24hr mechanical emergency roadside assistance is available.
Infringements, Tolls and Fines
Apollo will pass on any charges the guest receives for traffic infringements, toll or parking fines during their road trip For Toll Way Fees received, Apollo reserves the right to charge to the guest’s credit or debit card upon receiving the toll way fee, and an administration fee of $NZ 75 to cover associated administrative costs per toll way fee received.
Apollo offers guests the option of purchasing our Toll Package for 
$NZ 19 which gives guests a $NZ 30 ‘toll credit’. When travelling through toll ways the credit will be used up to the value of $NZ 30. Once $NZ 30 is exceeded, another toll package will be automatically charged to the guest’s credit card. (a .75c registration matching fee applies within the $NZ 30 credit).


Both - Service dogs and pet dogs are allowed to travel in our RVs with written permission from Apollo at time of booking. There is a NZ$200 pet service fee, this excludes service animals.

Smoking is not allowed in our vehicles.


Payment at Branches
For security reasons, Apollo will only accept credit card or debit card for rental charges paid on vehicle pick-up or drop off. Cash payments will not be accepted at rental branches. The bond on the vehicle is only payable at pick-up by credit card or debit credit card. The bond cannot be paid with a pre-paid credit card.


Credit Cards

We only accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club. Visa and MasterCard will incur an additional 3.1% surcharge on any transaction. American Express and Diners Club will incur an additional 5.4% surcharge on any transaction.


Exchange Rate / Currency Variations
All credit card transactions are conducted in New Zealand dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged. We do not accept any liability for variances up or down. Refunds by credit card can take up to 21 working days depending on the renter’s Financial Institution.


Value Pack
Add NZ$33 net per day  and NZ$44 for all other motorhomes. The maximum amount payable per rental segment for an Inclusive Rate is NZ$1,650 for Hitop & Endeavour motorhome and NZ$2,200 for all other motorhomes – i.e. 50 days rental.

The Value Pack includes: 'The High Road'Undercarriage/Overhead Damage (covered for accidental damage) Extra Driver Fees, Pre-purchased Gas Bottle, 3 Toilet Chemicals, Snow Chains (on request), Camp Chairs and Table, Baby or Booster Seats (on request).

Our rates include 15% GST.

Ferry Reservations
Ferry reservations can be difficult to manage during high season. We recommend that a reservation is made for a 7.7m vehicle on the ferry, irrespective as to the size of the motorhome reserved, to avoid complications due to possible upgrades.


Limit of Liability

In the event of no alternative vehicle being available to the renter our liability is limited to a refund of the hire charge or in the case of mechanical failure (unless caused by the renter) the remainder of the hire period.


We reserve the right to refuse any rental at our discretion.

Personal Injury
The RV has third party insurance cover and It is likely that any other vehicle involved in an accident also has third party insurance. Depending on the circumstances of the accident, the renter may be entitled to claim for their personal injury against the third party insurance of the party responsible for the accident. The extent of such third party insurance varies in different States and Territories and Apollo strongly recommends that all passengers take out their own Personal Injury Travel Insurance.

Property Damage
The RV is insured for damage to it or damage to the property of a third party. However the guest is responsible up to the amount of the applicable Liability for damage to third party property, or to the RV. The guest is also responsible for the cost of the daily rate for the period the vehicle is being repaired. There is no refund for unused portion of the rental period. The Liability applies to each claim, not RV.
The Liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident is reported to Apollo, not at the completion of the rental Period. Apollo reserves the right to charge the renter for any vehicle damage including Third Party property damage not reported on return of the RV.

Standard Liability - 'The Low Road'
Rental charge includes a Standard Liability of NZ$3,500 for Hitop & Endeavour and NZ$5,000 for all other vehicles.
A Bond of NZ$5,000 / NZ$3,500 will be collected at the time of entering into the Rental Contract. Payment of this Bond is only accepted by credit card. The NZ$5,000 / NZ$3,500 will be debited to the credit card account immediately. An administration fee equal to the merchant surcharge applies.

The Standard Liability can be reduced by purchasing one of the following Reduction Options:

Reduction Option 1 - 'The Middle Road'
This Option can be purchased by paying to Cheapa NZ$22 per day for the Hitop and Endeavour and NZ$32 for all other vehicles.

A Bond of NZ$1,500 for Hitop, Endeavour or NZ$2,500 for all other vehicles will be collected at the time of entering into the Rental Contract. This Bond is payable to Cheapa Campa by an open signed credit card imprint with an authorisation obtained (sufficient funds must be available) for NZ$2500/NZ$1500. An administration fee equal to the merchant surcharge applies.

*Excludes windscreen and tyre damage.

Reduction Option 2 - 'The High Road' (Included in the Value Pack)
$0 (zero) Liability applies (Except for exclusions). This Option can be purchased by paying to Cheapa NZ$29 per day for the Hitop and Endeavour and NZ$39 per day for all other vehicles.

A Bond of NZ$250 will be collected at the time of entering into the Rental Contract. This Bond is payable to Cheapa Campa by an open signed credit card imprint with an authorisation obtained (sufficient funds must be available) for NZ$250.

Single Vehicle Rollover
This Option can be purchased by paying NZ$5.5 per day. Minimum NZ$50 per rental. Available to be booked only when Value Pack is purchased.

For security purposes, only a credit/debit card can be used to provide a Bond. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the Bond upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.

The Bond is fully refundable when the vehicle is returned to the correct location on time, is full of fuel and all other terms of the Rental Contract have been complied with. If there is damage to the vehicle on its return, the Bond will be used to cover the cost of such damage up to the amount of the relevant Liability. However, if the terms of the Rental Contract are breached and the Bond is insufficient to cover the damage then any extra cost will be charged. Refunds by credit card including bond refunds can take up to 14 working days depending on the renter's Financial Institution.

Full Responsibility
At all times the renter is responsible for:
• Damage caused where the terms of Rental Contract have not been met by the guest (other than when a third-party damage admits fault and provides full contact and licence details).
• Damage caused by negligence and/or wilful conduct.
• Damage caused to the RV in any way by part or total water submersion or salt water.
• Damage caused to tyres and windscreen except where 'Value Pack' or 'WAP' has been purchased and applies.
• Damage caused to the RV when using the RV in contravention of any legislation or regulation controlling vehicular traffic.
• Damage caused due to a single vehicle roll over except where the 'Value Pack' or 'Single Vehicle Rollover' has been purchased and applies.
• Damage and associated costs with recovery of a bogged vehicle.
• Damage or loss caused to any personal belongings.
• Damage caused due to use of incorrect or contaminated fuel.
• Damage to the slide out of the RV.
• Damage to the undercarriage or overhead of the RV except where the 'Value Pack' has been purchased and applies.
• Damage to the awning or roof top tent of the Vehicle.
• Damage caused to the Vehicle by the incorrect use of snow chains.

All RVs are equipped with a tracking device. Apollo reserves the right to send warnings to guests that are driving in contradiction to the terms and conditions, or exceeding the speed limits. Guests that continuously ignore the warnings may be subject to a penalty fee of NZ$300 charged on each occasion identified.

Extended Roadside Assistance
NZ$4 per day capped at 25-days. This includes opening vehicle on lock out, lost key replacement up to NZ$120, emergency towing up to 25km, jump start, flat tyre change using spare located in the vehicle, fuel delivery up to 20 litres. Non-mechanical issues are not covered and guests may be required to take the RV to a repairer.

Windscreen and Tyre Protection Plus Extended Roadside Assistance
NZ$7 per day capped at 25-days. This includes 1 windscreen, 2 tyres, opening vehicle on lock out, lost key replacement up to NZ$120, emergency towing up to 25km, jump start, flat tyre change using spare located in the vehicle, fuel delivery up to 20 litres. Non-mechanical issues are not covered and guests may be required to take the RV to a repairer.


General Equipment
Each vehicle is supplied with complimentary general equipment: such as pegs and clothes line, dustpan & brush, fire extinguisher, bucket, hose and broom.

Kitchen Kit
Each vehicle is supplied with complimentary kitchen kit: plates, bowls, knives, forks, spoons, bottle opener, can opener, mixing bowls, colander, saucepans, frying pans, cooking utensils, chopping board, kettle, teapot, toaster and tea towel. Electrical appliances are supplied in vehicles that have 240V.

Personal Kit
Includes sheets, blankets, pillows, pillow cases and towels.

Apollo Connect is our custom-built app available for our guests travelling in Australia. The free app provides our guests with all the necessary information needed to make their Apollo journey even better.
The App is designed to:
• Enhance guest’s holiday experience by providing ‘how-to videos’ prior to pick up, so that they become familiar with their vehicle before arriving at the branch and prepare any questions they may have.
• Educate our guests on how to use the vehicle and on safe driving practics.
• Provide Apollo contact details to extend their holiday, contact roadside assistance, email any other enquiries and find answers to FAQ’s.
• Provide information on campgrounds while on the road and allow for campgrounds to be booked.
• Search and book great deals on attractions and activities through ApolloClub.
• Find helpful information on branch locations, nearby petrol stations, dumping stations, supermarkets, ATMs etc.
Guests can download the app on Google Play or the App Store.

We strongly recommend that you use soft bags instead of suitcases for your luggage. Soft bags take up less room and fit easier into the storage cupboards and lockers in the vehicle.
