From Sunshine to Skyline: A Family RV Journey from Orlando to New York

If you’ve ever dreamed of traversing the East Coast of the USA with your family, winding through forests, mountains, and vibrant cities, a motorhome adventure from Orlando to New York might be the perfect blend of discovery and comfort. Our 23-day campervan journey was more than just a scenic drive—it was a moving home base, history lesson, nature retreat, and thrill ride all wrapped into one.

This type of journey isn’t just a vacation—it’s a lifestyle. With the right RV road trip planning, you can string together a tapestry of unforgettable experiences, from theme parks to waterfalls, from Civil Rights history to glass-blowing art, all while sleeping in your own cozy camper.

Starting in the Magic of Orlando

Our road trip began where the magic is practically bottled and sold—Orlando, Florida. Universal Studios Florida kicked things off with adrenaline and laughter, perfect for families with kids (and grownups who love rollercoasters and movie magic). For those planning a motorhome trip in the USA from Orlando to New York, we recommend picking up your RV just outside the city to avoid downtown traffic.

From there, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex was our first real “learning meets awe” stop. Watching the kids marvel at rocket launches and space suits was a moment to remember.

Through Georgia & Civil Rights History

Heading north, East Beach offered a break with sun and sea air, while Savannah’s Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum deepened our understanding of American history in a way that resonated with the whole family.

Nearby, the Oyotunji African Kingdom was an unexpected gem—a small, authentic Yoruba village in South Carolina that felt like stepping into another world. It reminded us that a campervan trip isn’t just about nature or big attractions—it’s about discovering the lesser-known threads of America’s cultural fabric.

Mountains, Caverns & Coasters in the South

In North Carolina and Tennessee, the landscape shifted. Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve in Spartanburg gave us a tranquil breather, followed by the panoramic views from Look Rock - Viewing Platform, a quiet overlook in the Smoky Mountains.

One highlight for all ages: the Tuckaleechee Caverns—underground, echoing, and full of mystery. Afterward, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster had us zipping through the hills in a way that made us feel like kids again. While in the area, we couldn’t resist the quirky charm of Ole Smoky Moonshine—just for the adults, of course!

Wildlife, Stables & Safari Surprises

As we drove through Virginia, the Roanoker Restaurant gave us a taste of Southern hospitality, before the kids got their wildlife fix at Virginia Safari Park, where zebras and camels come right up to your vehicle (yes, even an RV!).

A scenic ride led us to Skyland Stables in Shenandoah National Park, where horseback rides along wooded trails were a calm counterpoint to the earlier excitement.

D.C. to Pennsylvania: Icons and Indulgences

In Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian National Zoological Park offered a budget-friendly (it’s free!) and enriching day. From there, we climbed through the rolling countryside of Pennsylvania, stopping at The Amish Village and the always-sweet Hershey’s Chocolate World. Both were hits with the kids and offered great RV parking facilities.

If you're using a camper route planner, we suggest spacing out your days in this area—you’ll want time to savor local farmer's markets like the Co-Op Farmers' Market and discover peaceful spots like Nay Aug Park in Scranton.

Upstate New York’s Natural Beauty

The route began to sparkle (literally) as we reached Corning Museum of Glass, where live demos kept everyone mesmerized. Then came one of the trip’s natural highlights: Journey Behind the Niagara Falls. Raincoats on, we descended into the misty thunder behind the legendary falls—a moment that truly lives up to the hype.

The Finger Lakes Welcome Center provided an ideal picnic and RV break, while Johnson Hall State Historic Site gave us a glimpse into colonial life.

Through New England to the Big Apple

As we crossed into New England, the New England Maple Museum in Vermont sweetened our journey (don’t skip the maple candy samples!). Nature met education at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, where rescued wildlife and kid-friendly trails turned a casual afternoon into a learning adventure.

Boston welcomed us with history and theatre at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, an interactive stop where the kids got to toss “tea” into the harbor while costumed guides brought the Revolution to life.

We wrapped up the route with a modern twist at Newport Centre—a shopping and dining hub just across the Hudson River from New York City.
