Why rent an RV in Scandinavia?

Scandinavia's combined land area of over 1.1 million square kilometers offers some of the most dramatic and accessible natural landscapes in the world. An RV rental provides the ultimate freedom to explore this vast region, from the fjord-laced coastline of Norway and the dense forests of Sweden to the lake districts of Finland and the charming countryside of Denmark. A motorhome hire is your self-contained basecamp, allowing you to follow the weather, linger in places you love, and wake up to breathtaking views that change every day.

The region is exceptionally well-suited for road trips, with high-quality roads, excellent English proficiency, and a strong cultural connection to the outdoors. A motorhome allows you to embrace the "slow travel" philosophy, fully immersing yourself in the landscape and local culture. You can shop at local markets for fresh ingredients, prepare meals with a view of a tranquil lake, and set your own pace without the constraints of hotel check-ins or tour schedules. It's an independent, comfortable, and deeply personal way to experience the heart of Northern Europe. For ideas you can prep on the road, watch our RV-friendly recipes playlist on YouTube.

Driving an RV in Scandinavia

Driving a motorhome in Scandinavia is a rewarding experience, characterized by well-maintained roads and stunning scenery. The four main countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) are part of the Schengen Area, meaning there are no systematic border controls between them, making multi-country trips simple. Be prepared for automated toll systems, especially in Norway, and extensive ferry networks that are often an integral part of major routes. While major highways are excellent, be ready to navigate narrower roads in rural and coastal areas, particularly when exploring Norway's famous fjords. Driving here is less about speed and more about savoring the journey, so always allow extra time to pull over at scenic viewpoints. On the routes offered through RV PLANET routes, you can itemize and track every expense along the way for easy budgeting.

RV camping & campgrounds

Scandinavia is a paradise for RV camping, offering a wide spectrum of options from fully-equipped campgrounds to designated overnight parking spots. The famous "Right of Public Access" in Norway, Sweden, and Finland allows for responsible wild camping, giving you the chance to park in stunning natural settings. For more comfort, the region has a dense network of official campgrounds (campingplasser) with amenities like electricity hookups, fresh water, dump stations, and often kitchens and laundry facilities. Many are located in spectacular locations: beside fjords, on lakeshores, or deep in the forest. Booking ahead is highly recommended during the peak summer months of July and August, especially in popular tourist areas.

Tips for first-time RV renters

Renting a motorhome for the first time is an exciting prospect, and a little preparation goes a long way. Before you hit the road, familiarize yourself with the vehicle's systems: how to manage the water tanks, operate the heating and electrical systems, and use the kitchen appliances. Packing smart is key; bring layers of clothing for the variable Scandinavian weather and soft-sided luggage for easy storage. When planning your daily drives, be realistic about travel times, as scenic roads often take longer to navigate than a map might suggest. Embrace the flexibility of RV travel by building buffer days into your schedule for spontaneous detours or simply relaxing at a beautiful campsite. Our guides are packed with practical advice to make your first trip smooth and memorable.

Compare suppliers & vehicle classes

Choosing the right motorhome and supplier is crucial for a successful trip. In Scandinavia, you'll find a range of vehicles, primarily Class B (campervans) and Class C (cab-over motorhomes). Campervans are more compact and easier to drive on narrow roads, making them ideal for couples or solo travelers. Class C motorhomes offer more space and amenities, including larger beds, bathrooms with separate showers, and more storage, which is great for families or longer trips. When comparing suppliers, look beyond the daily rate to consider what's included, the age of the fleet, depot locations, and customer reviews. We provide clear comparisons to help you select the perfect combination of vehicle and rental company for your Scandinavian adventure.

What Our Customers Say

We rented a caravan in Malsch near Baden-Baden — a large station with excellent and friendly staff (warmly recommend starting a caravan trip in the Black Forest or eastern France through them). On Avi's recommendation we left Israel on July 30, after Covid wave 3 and before Covid wave 4… in great timing. A very enjoyable trip with a great choice of campsites — Rheinmünster (near Baden), Schluchsee right next to the lake, and Iffezheim near the Rhine river. After 3 rentals in Germany (for trips in Scandinavia, Holland-Belgium, and now the Black Forest), the next destination will be North America — and we'll come back to Bandana for Avi. Yitzhak.
