Driver’s Licence and Minimum Age
A current motor vehicle driver’s licence is required. If the driver’s licence is not in the English language then an international driver’s licence is also required. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit. The driver’s licence must be valid for the whole length of the rental. The original driver’s licence must be shown at time of pick-up when the driver is present. The minimum age to drive the vehicle is 18 years.
Drivers must be 18 years of age or over with a full driver licence.
Pre-purchase Gas Bottle (Included in the Value Pack)
The gas canister/bottle is supplied full. A service fee of $25 is payable on pick up of the vehicle.
If you wish to make any changes to your booking (including voluntary downgrade) the booking will be calculated by using either the original flex rate or the flex rate that is valid at the time of the booking change, depending on whichever rate is higher. There are no exceptions to this rule. The following situations are classified as booking alterations:
- Change of name
- Change to pick-up or drop-off dates
- Change pick-up or drop-off branch location
- Change of RV category
- Change of rate scheme including special rates
If the rate scheme or RV category is changed, this is considered a new booking and cancellation fees may apply to the original booking.
If an amendment is made to the rental dates within 14 days of collection, no refund will be made if the length of hire is shortened (that is; the rental will be charged at the number of days originally booked). A relocation fee may apply if the collection or return location is amended within 14 days of vehicle pick up or if notification occurs during the hire.
Any change is with extra charge
Consecutive Star RV Motorhome/Campervan rentals can be combined to qualify for a long-term discount rate. Rentals in the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland on Star RV, Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippie Camper can be combined to obtain a long-term discount rate, providing travel is within a 3 month period. If drop off of a vehicle and pick up of a new vehicle occurs on the same day then a day each will be charged per respective vehicle. Multiple rentals are treated as separate rentals under the one way fee and minimum rental period conditions. This discount does not apply to completed bookings.
Change of Drop Off Destination after pick up
If the renter wishes to change the drop off destination after the rental has commenced, they first must obtain authorisation from the Hippie Camper Reservations. Subject to the change being approved, a minimum additional charge of NZ$750 will apply.
If the guest wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Hippie Camper Reservations who will advise of the additional costs. Rental extension is subject to fleet availability. The extra cost (calculated on the current rate of the day) of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone or at an Hippie Camper Branch immediately on confirmation of the rental extension. Failure to obtain authorisation will result in the renter being charged double the daily gross rental rate.
Change Of Vehicle
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, we reserve the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the renter to a refund.
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.
Should the renter decide to take a lesser vehicle than booked within 14 days of pick up or during the rental then they will not be entitled to any refund.
Vehicles must be collected and returned to our branches (not airports).
Apollo offers transfers free of charge with the Yellow Bus transfer service between Auckland Airport to our Auckland Branch. Guests will need to show their printed confirmation of their reservation to the driver. Bookings are not needed. Free Christchurch transfers are with our own bus service which guests need to call the branch on arrival to arrange pick up once they have cleared customs. More information on Christchurch transfers can be found on: https://www.apollocamper.co.nz/campervan-hire-christchurch.aspx
Hippie Camper has branches in Auckland and Christchurch.
Branches are open seven days a week, 8am to 4:00pm. Branches will be closed Christmas Day, New Years Day and Good Friday.
RV Introduction and Show Through On pick-up, our staff provide guests with a thorough RV show through with all the necessary information guests need to know about the interior and exterior features of their RV. This ensures guests are comfortable and confident with their RV before they start their road trip. To ensure guests have a thorough RV show through before starting their road trip, they will need to pick up their RV from the branch by 4pm.
The minimum rental for all vehicles is five days.
Minimum rental periods are subject to change during other peak periods.
One Way RentalsI
If a guest drops-off at a different branch location from which they picked-up, a NZ$150 one-way fee applies.
Hippie reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions, and the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the rental period.
All RV's can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The only exception to this is the loose road surface on any major ski field access roads or any recognised campground access road less than 12 Kilometres in length.
No RV shall be driven on Skippers Road (Queenstown), The Crown Range Road/Cardrona Valley Road (between Arrow Junction to Cardrona), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook), Wanaka - Mt. Aspiring Road beyond exit to Treble Cone, The Forgotten Highway (State Highway 43 from Taumaranui to Stratford), and North of Colville and Waikawau Township (Coromandel Peninsula).
Guests who travel to restricted areas without permission will void all liability cover in the event of damage or accident, and may be subject to a penalty fee of NZ$300 charged on each occasion identified.
Rates include unlimited kilometres.
For the safety of guests please don’t underestimate the time it will take to get from one point to another. While our RVs include unlimited kilometres we recommend travelling a maximum of 300 kilometres per day or the equivalent of 4-5 hours driving. We encourage our guests to take a break from driving at least every 2 hours.
Vehicle Condition - Returning the RV
Vehicles must be returned with the interior cleaned and holding tanks emptied. The vehicles exterior does not require cleaning unless it is difficult to ascertain the condition of the vehicle on return. Fees will apply if the vehicle is not returned in the required condition. NZ$200 Fees will apply if the vehicle is not returned in the required condition.
Drop and Go Service
All vehicles are to be returned with all surfaces wiped down (kitchen, floors, cupboard, tables, toilet & shower cubicle, windows etc.), fridge cleaned and emptied, rubbish removed, excessively dirty exteriors cleaned and beds converted back to dinettes. Should guests be on a tight schedule we can do this for them for NZ$75 – purchased at pick up. You simply need to Empty the grey water and toilet cassette, put away the clean dishes and return the vehicle neat and tidy to our Apollo team. The Apollo team will do the rest: Clean the kitchen and appliances, clear and clean the fridge, clean all cupboards and benches, clean the bathroom, clean the driving cabin and dispose of your last days' garbage. Garbage must be bagged. Excessive dirt/mud inside or outside the vehicle will incur additional charges.
Although we run late model vehicles, it may happen that small repairs are required. Repairs up to NZ$100 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed unless the damage is caused by the renter. For amounts over NZ$100, Apollo will need to be informed in advance. All vehicles are enrolled in the New Zealand Automobile Association and 24hr mechanical emergency roadside assistance is available if needed simply contact Apollo Assist at 0800 234 567.
Infringements, Tolls and Fines
Apollo will pass on any charges the guest receives for traffic infringements, toll or parking fines during their road trip For Toll Way Fees received, Apollo reserves the right to charge to the guest’s credit or debit card upon receiving the toll way fee, and an administration fee of $NZ 75 to cover associated administrative costs per toll way fee received.
Apollo offers guests the option of purchasing our Toll Package for $NZ 19 which gives guests a $NZ 30 ‘toll credit’. When travelling through toll ways the credit will be used up to the value of $NZ 30. Once $NZ 30 is exceeded, another toll package will be automatically charged to the guest’s credit card. (a .75c registration matching fee applies within the $NZ 30 credit).
Both - Service dogs and pet dogs are allowed to travel in our RVs with written permission from Hippie Camper at time of booking. There is a NZ$200 pet service fee, this excludes service animals.
Smoking is not allowed in our vehicles.
Payment at branches
For security reasons, Hippie Camper will only accept credit card or debit card for rental charges paid on vehicle pick up or drop off. Cash payments will not be accepted at rental branches. The Bond on the vehicle is only payable at pick-up by Credit Card or Debit Credit Card. The Bond cannot be paid with a pre-paid Credit Card.
We only accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club. Visa and MasterCard will incur an additional 2% surcharge on any transaction. American Express and Diners Club will incur an additional 2.8% surcharge on any transaction.
Exchange Rate / Currency Variations
All credit card transactions are conducted in New Zealand dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged. We do not accept any liability for variances up or down. Refunds by credit card can take up to 21 working days depending on the renter’s Financial Institution.
Add NZ$33 Net per day.
- The minimum amount payable per rental segment for a Value Pack will be based on the minimum rental period applicable for your rental.
- The maximum amount payable per rental segment for the Value Pack is NZ$1,650 – i.e. 50 nights rental.
The Value Pack includes: Lliability Reduction Option (The High Road), Pre-purchased Gas Bottle, Extra Driver Fees, Personal Kits (from April 2020 includes in the daily rate), Camp Chairs and Table, Baby/booster seats (with prior request). From April 2020 - also include: Snow Chains (on request).
Our rates include 15% GST.
Limit of Liability
In the event of no alternative vehicle being available to the renter our liability is limited to a refund of the hire charge or in the case of mechanical failure (unless caused by the renter) the remainder of the hire period.
We reserve the right to refuse any rental at our discretion.
